		<title>"Mazu,"(2022)</title>

	 "Mazu," presents a series of postcards written to Mazu, the sea goddess who arrived Taiwan from the Chinese mainland three centuries ago. Today, the Taiwanese see her not only as a protector of the island's fishermen and sailors as a guardian deity of the entire island of Taiwan. During periods of geopolitical instability, most recently during prominent US politician Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei, the postcards asked for her protection.

The photographs printed on the postcards document my personal investigation into the impact of Pelosi’s visit, not only on the cross-strait relationship but also on myself and other Taiwanese. I explore my anxieties about the safety of my family and friends amidst unprecedented Chinese military activity around Taiwan. It also reflects on the mental and physical toll the crisis has had on soldiers and the economic sanctions levied by Beijing against Taiwan’s fishing industry as punishment for the governing party in Taiwan’s pro-independent slant. 


The project also uses Mazu as a symbol to address the complicated identity dilemma Taiwanese people face: are we "Taiwanese" or "Chinese in Taiwan"? Seventy years after the Chinese Kuomintang government's retreat to Taiwan in 1949, this question still plays a vital role in Taiwanese civil society. Mazu is an important religious figure in China and Taiwan and Chinese state media since the 1990s has been using her to emphasise shared cultural roots to promote unity across the Taiwan Strait. 

Alongside the postcards, the piece also includes an installation of a postbox-style incinerator akin to those used in Taoist ceremonies. The audience is invited to pen a postcard to Mazu with their response to the ongoing Taiwan Strait crisis. In line with the Taoist tradition of burning ceremonial money as offerings to gods, the postcards collected will then be set alight in the postbox and thus transported to Mazu.&#38;nbsp;


“Mazu,” is the winner of the &#38;lt;Landskrona Foto &#38;amp; Breadfield Dummy Award 2024&#38;gt;&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;&#38;lt;Belsfast Photo Festival Photo-Book Prize 2025&#38;gt;. It is also shortlisted for the &#38;lt;Dummy Award 2024 by The PhotoBook Museum&#38;gt; and showcased in &#38;lt;Singapre International Photography Festival.&#38;gt; Now in the collection of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie &#38;lt;MEP&#38;gt;.

	“Taiwan Calendar 2025” is a thematic calendar created in collaboration with Taiwan Information Environment Research Center &#38;lt;IORG&#38;gt;. IORG regularly publishes biweekly reports grounded in data and scientific research, working to strengthen media literacy in Taiwan and to counter disinformation. These reports analyze different kinds of manipulation narratives within Taiwan’s digital information environment, trace their origins, and link their cycles to social events, thereby revealing the patterns through which manipulation emerges in public discourse.

The work takes inspiration from IORG’s role in Taiwan’s contemporary information landscape and from the parallel with how earlier generations observed seasonal changes in the natural world to create the traditional farmers’ almanac. Just as agrarian societies once relied on the rhythms of nature to guide daily life, the calendar seeks to map the “seasons” of modern information manipulation in Taiwan. Each month presents one manipulation phenomenon identified by IORG as being “in season,” accompanied by images that the artist either creates or selects to reflect on, or at times question, the logic and intentions behind these narratives.

Beyond exploring the relationship between time and politics, the piece also responds to recent changes in Taiwan’s official holidays. In 2025, five new national holidays were added, including Taiwan Retrocession Day. A calendar, as a tool for organizing time, inevitably becomes a subtle vehicle of ideology. The official holidays it records tell us what we are expected to remember, and when we are expected to remember it.

		<description>“Ten Minute Break”(2021-2022) is a photography installation recreating my high school classroom environment. The installation features a desk with personal items such as a pencil case, water bottle and basketball with photographs of my high school life printed on the surface. The photographs were taken during my last trip to the school. The installation stimulate some of the physical reminders that take me - and hopefully the audience - back to the banality of school life: the gritty feel of the basketball; the steaming smell emanating from the metal lunch box; the sound of paper rustling in the library. When I encounter these sounds and sites in my life as an adult, they trigger memories of my school life that are both positive and negative. 


Besides exploring the relationship between photography, objects and memories, the installation intends to comment on the enormous pressure faced by students under the current Taiwan examination system. I wish to raise awareness of students’ mental health by inviting viewers into my lived experience in a high-stress Taiwanese school.

“Ten Minute Break”is featured in group show “VARIATIONS” (2022) curated by Vera Hadzhiyska.&#38;nbsp;

	Surrounded by steelmaking and oil refinery plants, Dalinpu is a highly polluted village located on the outskirts of the city of Kaohsiung, Southern Taiwan. 

In 2019, the city government drafted a relocation plan for the village, which sparked outrage among local residents. While some residents opposed relocation due to the poor relocation packages offered by the city government, others rejected it entirely due to a strong sense of connection to the place. 
In collaboration with environmental anthropologist Raffaele Ippolito, this project focuses on the discordant narratives surrounding environmental suffering that residents of fenceline communities such as Dalinpu often uphold. Sometimes, these stand in contrast with the claims of environmental advocacy groups and governmental institutions. 
Through participant observation and ethnographic interviews with the villagers, the project aims to navigate the complexity of life in Dalinpu in the face of contamination and land dispossession. This complexity is marked by chemical exposure and socio-economic marginalisation resulting from industrial development.

	&#38;nbsp;“00074” was the number I was assigned for my Taiwanese military service, compulsory for all young men on the island. The civil war with the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) offically ended after Chiang Kai-shek fled with his troops to Taiwan in 1949. The legacy of the civil war and the lingering threat of military invasion from China means Taiwanese men such as myself have to complete four months of military service (down from the two years that my father had to serve). This short and badly organized training is poor preparation for military combat. But the experience brought me in contact with Taiwanese men from all walks of life.

Every "soldier" was stripped of his identity. We all had the same close- shaven haircut, wore the same uniform, ate the same dreary meals, and slept in the same dormitory. The environment was constructed to create uniformity among the conscripts. But still, with time, our personalities and quirks found a way of sneaking through. I soon discovered in the sea of green uniforms was a monk, several gang members, and a rich Taipei school drop-out. Never in our lives would such an eclectic group of people come together and call themselves bunk-mates for four months.

		<description>“It’s only when I am stood staring at the lapping waves, rising steadily up Brighton beach that I realize I miss home. The calm sound of the seawater washing up the shore,&#38;nbsp;the gentle breeze, laced with salty water, brushing against my skin. It feels familiar.

I left my home country of Taiwan after graduating highschool, and I never really looked back. Not until I went to the seaside. My studies and works took me to Hong Kong, England, and Vietnam. In all these disparate geographies, I found myself being pulled towards the sea, where I would be transported back to family holidays spent swimming in the seas surrounding Taiwan. Memories would flood back of my father, a beach lifeguard in a former life, teaching me to swim; sea-food meals with the extended family on the beach; my inebriated uncle telling stories about the fisherman grandfather whom I never met.

It took me a few years to find my way back to Taiwan, but when I did, I set off on a car journey along the east coast to take this series of photographs. Between here and&#38;nbsp;there is a visual record of my nostalgic feelings for&#38;nbsp;the sea.”

Gravitating towards research-led and long-term projects, Lin’s work spans various social issues in Taiwan, from Taiwan Strait geopolitics and Indigenous rights to climate justice. His work has been featured in Landskrona Foto Festival,&#38;nbsp;The PhotoBook Museum, Singapore International Photography Festival, Belfast Photo Festival,&#38;nbsp;The Light Observer Magazine, and Kaohsiung Film Festival.&#38;nbsp;
